Masque of the Red Death

for homework tonight, please comment to this post:

What conclusions do you think Poe expects you (the reader) to draw as a result of the neighborhood, culture and larger world of the story?

How do these conclusions keep with gothic ideals?

Poe expects the reader's conclusion to think of the story as an allegory. With the colored rooms representing symbolic counterparts, life, death, happiness, sadness etc.. This story is an allegory of life and death, about how human beings trying to avoid death. Poe puts in a character, Prince Prospero, a selfish egocentric prince that will avoid death at any means necessary. Prospero blocks off his land by closing the gates to his castle, but even that does not stop the Red Death, showing that no matter, important or not, death will overcome the individual. The color of the rooms is an allegory, symbolizing life's phases. Each color represents the part of phase in life, ultimately ending with the last room, colored black indicating death- the room all guests fear to step in.

These conclusions keep up with the gothic literature because it involves gruesome death and the use of allegory symbolizing death.

Edgar Allan Poe is one of my favorite gothic writers, I enjoyed reading "The Cask of Amontillado"

I THINK POE EXPECTS US TO DRAW MANY CONCLUSIONS. I THINK THAT HE EXPECTS US TO CONCLUDE THAT EVEN THO HE IS A GOTHIC WRITER HE IS VERY DIVERSE. HE MAKES HIS STORIES INTERESTING AND DIFFERENT. ALSO THAT HE REALLY WANTS YOU TO GET A VISUALIZATION OF WHAT HES WRITING ABOUT. AND THESE 2 ARE A VERY CRITIAL PART OF GOTHIC. CAUSE U NEED TO B BOTH DIVERESE AND SEE THE GOTHIC.

He expects the reader to conclude that within his gothic writing that there is a point to be made even though his writing may be conplicated. For example with all the rooms the last one had the crimson red color due to the fact that something bad was going to happen. As in bloody. That was one of his orignal gothic ideals that he wanted to express in the story.

to me i think poe with his gothic wrighting is try to make people feel at first that the character way of life is the wright chose and shows that the main character is great but gothic comes in and shows the negative part in that person life and the surroundings in the his story to show that there is all was two side"s of a person or a place

Poe expects the reader to draw conclusions based on what the reader knows about the gothic form of literature. For example, how the rich are always in celebration and removed from the reality of almost all things, while the more common people have nothing but the reality to deal with, and how they are overlooked to make the whole seem better, as if it is a perfect society.

Poe is showing alot of different emotions in this story. I think the colored rooms would describe the mood and emotions. And is also symoblizing life and the steps to go through. The way he describes each room shows the Gothic Writing he uses in the story.

Poe expects the reader to conclude on what they already know. He leaves hints behind his writing which are very difficult to find but if able to get it you can conclude what Poe really wanted to pass the reader. For example the rooms how they were all diverse in colors but the one that had the darkest color had some kind of sin in it.

Edger Allan Poe expects, us as readers to feel the gothic in his writing, by the descriptions of the room's and their colors, and at the party when everyone would stop when the clock rang.
I think that Poe uses this scenario to exemplifies the cycle of life and death, and that dying is inevitable and that is showed in Prince Prospero's character.

even though im posting to this very late, i recall this story. Edgar Allen poe uses very descriptive and gruesome words to describe his settings and what is supposed to be the thrill or point of his stories. in my opinion, he tries to throw the reader off to give us many ideas on what can happen next in the story

Poe expects the reader to conclude what the meaning behind his story is and he uses mystery and darkness to show the gothic lit and by adding simple objects like the loud clock that rung and prince prosperos ignorant and selfish character who puts things on the line and everyone at risk for his own needs. He also wants people to see that death will come sooner or later, that everybody’s has to die sometime and others sooner than some because they choose a different path than others.

I think Poe expected the reader to understand the signifiances of the rooms, the charceters, and thier deaths. Which all could be seen very differntly. But since thier is no clear outline or anwser to the questions, that arise during the story. Thought one thing can be said as fact. That the ending is agothic one. For one thing in the end everyone dies self explantory. I interped the last room and the ultimate death of all the chacarters is the, revaltion of thier greed. In the end showing the truth the thing they tryed to avoide. That being the Black Death. Which they put a mask on.

Poe was a very significat author. His gothic writing styles was very unique "masque of the red death" imagery and how he gave such signicant qualities to every room . the symbolism of the rooms and how the color gave a differnt sense to each giving diverse emotions for every room. what made poe differnt was his approach to gothic. he dident just write complete gorry scenary. the way he portrays the main character be this stubburn closed minded person who only cared for his well being. how these rich people were closing their lives to what was really going outside the walls. the death of the people. the significance of the clock. its moral of the story was that death is inevitable no matter how much you close your mind from it,it will happen one way or another.
