Defining Romanticism

Judging by what you may or may not know from American History during the early to mid 19th century (1800s - 1860), what do you know about Romanticism? What themes are relevent to it?

Please think about romaticism, transcendalism and gothic writing. Who is associated with each of these big movements in our history?

Comment on this blog post - Discuss a definition of each of the above and find one author who may exemplify what each is about.

I look forward to reading what you write.

ROMANTISM MEANING THE QUALITY OR STATE OF BEING ROMANTIC. TRANSCENDALISM MEANING ASSERTING SPIRITUAL AND TRANSCENDENTAL OVER MATERIAL AND EMPERICAL. AND GOTHIC WRITING MEANING A STYLE OF FICTION CHARACTERIZED BY THE USE OF DESOLATE OR REMOTE SETTINGD AND MACABRE, MYSTERIOUS, OR VIOLENT INCIDENTS. I THINK WHAT THESE TERMS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH IS THE TIME PERIOD OF MAJOR LITERATURE. THESE THEMES CHARACTERIZED THAT PARTICULAR ERA IN HISTORY. I THINK A AUTHOR WHO MAY EXEMPLIFY THIS IS SHAKESPERE WITH HIS MANY STYLES OF WRITNGS!

Romanticism began in the mid-18th century and reached its height in the 19th century. The Romantic literature of the nineteenth century holds in its topics the ideals of the time period, concentrating on emotion, nature and the expression of nothing. One of the authors that focuses on romanticism pieces is Anna Laetitia Barbauld. The Romantic era was one that focused on the
commonality of humankind and, while using emotion and nature; the poets and their works shed light on people's universal natures.

Classicism is a relevent theme to romanticism. William Shakespere exemplifies this genre.
Transcendalism is a movement in nineteenth-century American literature and thought. It is called on people to view the objects in the world as small versions of the whole universe and to trust their individual intuitions. Ralph Waldo Emerson exemplifies this genre.
Gothic writing is abstract writings about deep feelings or longings. They usually have a very dark or very deep meaning. Most are about rejection, being hurt in love, the need to inflict pain on ones self or others, or feelings of abandonment. Rarely are they about evil forces or the devil as many think. Edger Allen Poe exemplifies this genre.

Romantism was sort of a renisances for the people thought. For example people thought about nature that was not affected by man. The writers of this time also apraised spontaneous action and thought. which was probably very out of the ordinary for the time. It seemed that romantism was about freedom and self expresion. This freedom that was expressed in the 1800 helped shape the free thinking world we have today.

Romanticism is a social, intellectual, and creative movement from the 1800s. Art, simplicity, beauty, and things that are inherent or "pure" are associated with the Romantic era as these concepts were very popular back then.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, Madame de Genlis, and Henry Thoreau are romantic, gothic, and transcendent authors, respectively.

Romanticism is the state of being romantic. Transcedalism is the group of ideas in religion, culture, literature, and philosophy. Gothic writing is the style of writing that uses demonic, evil, violent, disturbing, mysterious, and dark events. Edgar Allan Poe, one of my favorite authors, uses a lot of gothic writing like the story "The Cask of Amontillado" where he kidnaps a man and kills him. The way he writes the story is very gothic and evil.
