Homework for Tuesday due Wednesday, 12/17

Write a poem with a transcendental theme in the style of Whitman. Find a picture for the inspiration, these will be shared in class tomorrow.

Use Whitman's poem as a "mentor" text - mimic or imitate the style Whitman uses in your own work.

Then reflect on the experience on this blog - is it hard to imitate some one else's style?

It is very difficult to mimic another author's style. Poetry generally lacks restrictions—you can position words in any way you wish, you can even misspell them or make them up—but this assignment requires us to follow strict guidelines regarding subject, style, and/or rhythm, among other things.

Imitating Whitman's writing was some-what challenging; and i say this because, Whitman uses very strong language. Not cursing, i mean like, he uses deep words that when he uses them, it brings out the story. Whitman made a poem ( i forgot the exact title, it had something with the word ' grass' in it) that was very good because of the language he used. he painted a picture in your mind.

It was hard for me to imitate Whitmen's poetry, especially relating my topic to his. Writing poetry in general is difficult for me but it is much more difficult to do when imitating and following someone else's writing craft.

it really depends. if its a cut and dry piece then its easy but if its free flowing like whitman it can be difficult becase you don't know where exactly the poem will take you. you just have to go with the flow and hope.

yes it is very hard to mimic someone else's style because your stlye reflects on your personality everybody is different, so to sit down and try to be like someone else is challenging.
