Questions from class discussion today for thought

Please post your ideas to these comments:

What is Miller's purpose in having 2 characters like Danforth and Hathorne?

Why is Parris so threatened by Proctor? What does Proctor represent and how can that expose Parris?

How would you characterize the characters? Flat? Round? Stereotypical? dynamic?

Well the purpose of having these to characters is to show how somberness can over come the truth. By combining these 2 personality's a person going against them could never win.

Parris is afraid of Proctor because actually Parris is a fraud. If proctor chooses to live he could of actually present Parris for the fraud he is.

danforth and hathorne were both sterotypical puritan man. people who lived their lives straight from the book. they were both superior and stubburn. they superiority overruled everyone . by miller putting in both character it stressed the fact of how they controlled the town. they were the leaders.
i think parris is afraid of proctor because he knows proctor is a real person . who tells no lies and is genuinly a good person . meanwhile parris is a fraud and his entire life is a lie.

By miller putting in danforth and hathorne as the judges it gave the idea of how Puritan the town was, most people went by the bibble, danforth and hathorne were stubburn and unfair and everything that didn't go by gods book was not good and to be punished.

Parris was afraid of proctor because he knew he was fake and proctor knew it too. And procuor was the opposite and a good man and he knew parris might also be trying to protect abigail

miller choose to have 2 characters like Danforth and Hathorne was because i feel that if he had 2 people that believed the same this that maybe everyone would say that they are right because 2 heads are better then one.

and parris is scared of procter because parris is a fake and only procter knows it and can prove him for the fake that he is.

I believe that the Millier had 2 charcters like Danforth and Hathorne because the palay was on a smaller scale compared to what really happened. so he add these to show how many like minded people there where. it could also be because Danfoth believed that any one who didnt think like him believed in the devil. so he most likely works with the person that he trusts

Mr Parris is affraid of MR proctor because proctor dosnt believe any thing about him. I also think that parris is jelous of him because he has more respect in the town.

i believe that the 2 character of danforth and hathorne was like a check and balance so if one was being unfair then the other could correct him. But that didn't happen.

Parris is threatened by proctor because he can see right through her and she doesnt was to be se4en as a fruad and a lier.

Well I believe the purpose of having 2 judges that were very similar were to really push to the point how unfairly those who were accused of being communists during the McCarthyism era, since the book was originally created to represent what was happening during those times. Arthur Miller basically wanted people to understand how adamant judges became during this era

Miller's purpose of having 2 characters like Danforth and Hathorne, was to show how small minded people were during this era.
I believe these characters were used to show how things were only based upon what people thought and not necessarily on the truth.
Parris feels threatened by Proctor, because Proctor is the only person that knows that he is being fake and is basically a fraud.
I think that most of the characters were stereotypical Puritans; except John Proctor who I feel is dynamic because he is the only person who goes through a change because of the action of the plot.

I feel that Miller used Both judges Harathrone & darthrone to show how small minded people were and still are.

Also i believe Parris was so initmitated by Proctor. B/c Proctor knew the truth about Parris and that he really was a fraud and lied about his how life.

the purpose of having two characters like danforth and hathorne were to show that thye story has deep characters. the both of them are judges in the play and do not hide the truth from any body.
parris fears proctor because he knows that proctor wont hide anything and he will tell the truth. in the play, proctor had a goo d personality. he was the "good guy"

What is Miller's purpose in having 2 characters like Danforth and Hathorne?

I THINK HIS PURPOSE WAS TO HAVE TWO CONVINCING PEOPLE WOULD PERSUADE PEOPLE TO BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE RIGHT

Why is Parris so threatened by Proctor? What does Proctor represent and how can that expose Parris?

BECAUSE PARRIS KNOWS THAT PROCTOR KNOWS SOMETHING ABOUT HER THAT EVERYBODY DOESNT, IF PROCTOR LIVES THEN HE COULD TELL HOW PARRIS IS A FAKE
How would you characterize the characters? Flat? Round? Stereotypical? dynamic?

I WOULD SAY THA CHARACTERS ARE VERY INTERESTING AND SOME CHARACTERS REMIND ME OF PEOPLE IN MY LIFE SO I ENJOYED READING IT

well the reason to have two judges is to give the appearance that the court is far and that they would rethink the jury that is clamming the people of witchery but it is not true they work together to betray the people
